 About Hopstock
Between fjord and mountain. Surrounded by history in the shape of Hopperstad Stave Church and Hove Stone Church from the 12th century. The idyllic old wooden dwellings at Vikøyri take you back in time. The well maintained natural landscape inspires you to walk or to photograph. It all started in 1659 when the guest house at Vikøyri first got a licence to sell liquor.
One summer’s day in 1838 the old guest house burned down, but the site didn’t stand empty for long. Jens Boalth Wallentinsen built a new one and in 1847 he sold out lock, stock and barrel to his brother-in-law, Ole Andreas Hopstock. So you know how the hotel got its name.
In 1945 Mons Thorsen of Vik took the place over and his sister Malla ran it until 1971, when the Riiber family took over as hosts. Anne Marie and Carl Melchior took the place over, on condition that a new hotel was to be built within five years. It was in fact completed in 1973. In 1989 their son Carl André took over. Today it is Carl André, the 16th hotelier at Vikøyri, and his family who welcome guests to Hopstock. In 1995 the hotel was extended from 27 to 55 rooms, plus six motel rooms. In some of the lounges, furnishings and building details from the old hotel which was demolished in the early 70s are still kept.
