History

Welcome to Hopstock Hotel and Motel and the saga of a guest house which has spent 340 years transforming itself into an intimate, modern and comfortable hotel beside the Sognefjord.

The hostelry at Vikøyri first acquired a liquor licence in 1659, so it is from that date that we trace our history. On 16th June 1838 the old guest house burned down. Jens Roald Valentinsen built a new one and sold it to his brother-in-law Ole Andreas Hopstock in 1847, which is how the hotel got its name. Mons Thorsen of Vik took the place over in 1945 and his sister Malla ran it until 1971.

Anne Marie and Carl Melchior took over in 1971. The takeover was conditional on their building a new hotel within 5 years. It was in fact completed in 1973.

We expanded from 27 to 55 rooms in 1995 and with 6 more in the motel we have 61 rooms available today.

The present hotelier has been responsible for running Hopstock since 1989 and as the 16th hotelier at Vikøyri I am proud of our history.
